1st Lotus Airfield driving day

09.00am

Met the other drivers at the very wet Airfield, Andrew (instructor) shows up with a courteous 180 spin in his Lotus Elise. Introductions & Safety briefing  – general Do’s ands Don’ts for the day..

We were taken out into the Airfield individually with Andrew sitting alongside, first thing, emergency stop from 60mph & figure of 8 slow speed driving and steering (gives Andrew an understanding of general ability.) A nice easy start…

·        Introduction to high speed cornering.

With the instructor sitting alongside he asks you to take the corner as fast as you can…..Keeping inside an imaginary wall depicted by a long drain set into the tarmac. (Note: plenty of run off area and nothing to hit..)

Everyone’s first attempt a nice leisurely 45 mph. Try again…and again…and again…

We all managed to reach about 55-60 round the corner…Following a couple of high speed spins trying to find our limit…..Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..!!!

Andrew then took the controls.  Showing us how it should be done.We were introduced to modulated braking, steering into the corner, use of trail braking through the corner, (and yet more spins)

After several attempts, speeds in excess of 70 mph at entry were achieved..

But, it was not about the speed.   Having the space, safety and tuition to find the limits of the car is the learning

  • You are hurtling in a straight line toward a corner.
  • You apply the brakes - fully - while still travelling in a straight line.
  • At some point, you release a little pressure from the brakes and start to turn in.
  • As you bend into the corner and approach the throttle application point, you progressively release the rest of the pressure from the brake
What's the point of it? Trail braking helps you rotate the car into a corner by controlling the transfer of weight onto the front tyres, giving them more stick, and thus compensating for any understeering tendency the car would otherwise have.

After much grinning, laughing and tyre scrubbing its back to the technical stuff..

11.00am     -               Coffee break

Andrew takes the controls to explain what this all means….

With the car on full lock, driving forward slowly turns the car in a tight circle….(yeah we all know that)

Increasing speed, understeer kicks in as the front tyres exceed their grip.  Turning the wheels slightly straighter eliminates the understeer and then you can accelerate again…..Practice time…..Effective use of understeer in cornering…..

Exercises – increase and decrease the size of the circle or size of the corner by altering your amount of understeer, keeping the steering wheel in a single position 180° from straight.  Results in drifting into and out of corners….. Applying more throttle when in a corner creates understeer and with practice increases the exit speed of the car and engine….

·        General Car Control

Spin avoidance, skid control and basic control techniques…

12.00pm     -               Lunch Break

·        "The Circuit"

Now we all want to be racing drivers and here is our first chance…..

With the mind buzzing from the mornings learning’s and banter over lunch, its time to put the teaching into practice…

The Course

Andrew took the controls, took each driver round the circuit made from cones, showing the lines, entry and exit….

The circuit would test us on basic driving and acceleration, coupled with the techniques we had learnt during the day.

High speed cornering, entry and exit – Trail braking – Drifting the car through the ‘esses’ and tight hair pin turns….

Andrew then made a Quick Lap in our cars to set us a target…….
Instructors times – WET  My S3 1 min 05.97
  Pete’s V8S 1 min 04.95
  Matt’s S1 1 min 08.07
  Mike’s V8S 1 min 04.91
We then had the chance, 3 laps first from standing start then 2 quicker laps….
Me (Dave Bridge) 1 min 11.84
  1 min 18.00 (spun)
  1 min 10.02

Pete 1 min 23.40 (spun)
  1 min 12.00
  1 min 11.12

Matt 1 min 32.34 (spun)
  1 min 14.19
  1 min 26.00 (spun)

(Mad)Mike 1 min 08.00
  1 min 07.56
  1 min 06.21

After this initial run, we went out numerous times with the other drivers as our passengers, observing and timing each other….

The circuit dried and grip increased…..

By the end of the day there were some very respectable times, some very scuffed tyres, and 4 worn out but happy TVR owners…..

The day was a definite THUMBS UP…

4.00pm        -               Finish - down the pub for a quick pint and chat….
