Procedure:
1). Disconnect the battery so as not to electrocute yourself or short out any of the car.
2). The Coil and the alternator will need to be removed to access the rocker covers. For this you will need 13mm socket and spanners for the coil bolts and the top alternator bolt. The Adjuster bracket underneath the alternator will also have to be undone. For this you will need the 17mm socket on an extender bar. After this unbolt or loosen it off from the alternator.
Having removed the alternator and coil, use the 10mm socket on the extender bar to remove the 8 bolts and spacers that secure the rocker covers.
This is what the rockers look like:-
Move the pulley using the 19mm socket and ratchet clockwise (when looking directly at the engine from the front), until the small notch on the crank pulley is at 0 on the timing cover. Keep moving it round until you see the valves on number 5 cylinder moving at the same time, in opposite direction. When this is happening they are on overlap. Now check the clearances on number 1 cylinder, using the feeler gauges. Adjust as necessary using the 11mm socket.
The Inlet valves are set to 0.35mm and the exhaust to 0.40mm
When the 5th Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 1st Cylinder
When the 3rd Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 4th Cylinder
When the 6th Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 2nd Cylinder
When the 1st Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 5th Cylinder
When the 4th Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 3rd Cylinder
When the 2nd Cylinder is on overlap, adjust the 6th Cylinder
Here is the valve arrangements and cylinder arrangement for the 2.9 V6. The 2.8 is different.
Once you have finished, put the rocker covers back on, do not forget the gaskets. Replace the alternator, and coil and reconnect the battery. This is quite and easy process, just time consuming to take the rocker covers off.
