Got An Iffy Throttle Pot ?

What are the symptoms of a dodgy throttle pot ?

  • Miss-firing or fuel starvation under hard accelerating
  • Hesitancy when accelerating
  • will not rev if you depress the throttle  the engine chokes and tries to die
  • and similar

Where is it ?

  • The throttle pot is located at the front of the engine above the thermostat and next to the idle speed control valve

How to Check if the Throttle Pot is defective ?

  • Simply unplug the throttle pot and tape or tie up the plug so it will not catch on any belts fans etc
  • Drive the car, it wont be as if the pot was working normally as the ECU goes into safe mode, but it will run a lot smoother if the existing pot is faulty. If there is no noticeable difference then the fault probably lies elsewhere. Also note the fuel economy will drop as well.

Fitting a new Throttle Pot

  • Source a new throttle pot from a Ford dealer, or a better option seems to be to order a Cerbie 4.2 throttle pot from TVR costs about half the price and lasts longer.
  • The wiring for the new pot might well be different  to the existing throttle pot.
  • For more information on wiring read this Pistonheads thread

Note :- This information is only relevant for the 2.9L Engine
